Information on the EU ISS Visiting Fellows Programme 2009
The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) offers fellowships to young researchers who are in the process of obtaining – or have already obtained – a doctorate degree. Individuals pursuing a graduate degree, or those with an equivalent professional qualification, may likewise apply.
The period of study at the Institute is for three months. Visiting Fellows will receive a stipend of 1,500 euros per month as a contribution towards living expenses and any necessary insurance. In addition, the Institute will cover the roundtrip travel expenses (economy class) from the candidate’s European home country to Paris, to the amount of not more than 500 euros for EU and EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) nationals and 800 euros for non-EU nationals.
All Visiting Fellows are expected to carry out research on a topic relating to CFSP (Common Foreign and Security Policy) and/or ESDP (European Security and Defence Policy). Specifically, Fellows are expected to produce a research paper as a contribution to the Institute’s work.
The Institute prefers that Visiting Fellows focus their research on topics other than the national policies of EU member states. While in principle any research topic will be taken into consideration, special attention will be devoted to those covering:
EU and security in Africa
European integration: CFSP/ESDP
ESDP missions: assessment and future scenarios
Global governance: multilateralism, regionalism and multipolarity
Global challenges, e.g. humanitarian crisis, proliferation, energy, etc.
Violence/crisis prevention and crisis response
Human rights and democracy in the EU’s foreign policy
Asymmetric warfare
Arms industry and Space
Regional issues, e.g. the Middle East and South Caucasus
The Balkans and Turkey
Russia
The European ‘neighbours’ (the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe)
The U.S. and transatlantic relations
China and India
Applicants are expected to have a very good knowledge of at least one of the CFSP working languages (French and English).
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 1st October 2008. Applications that are incomplete or received past the deadline will not be accepted. Applications should include: (1) the application form, (2) a one-page description/outline of the research project, (3) a C.V., (4) a three to five-page writing sample (in English or French, on any topic) and (5) two letters of recommendation to be sent to the Institute separately by mail addressed by the referees to the Director of the Institute.
