Alternative summit

European and African civil society organizations will meet in Lisbon on 8 to 9 December, in parallel with EU-Africa Summit. According to the press release: “they will alert political leaders and public opinion of the two continents to the disasters caused by trade competition, economic exploitation of ecosystems, restrictive migration policies and contempt of the most fundamental economic and social rights”.

The main objectives of the alternative summit is to:

  • Raise awareness among the european and african public opinions about the unbalanced relationships between Europe and Africa
  • Gather the widest range of portuguese, european and african organizations to create debate opportunities about these issues, and develop an initiative at the euro-african level
  • Convince the african and european political leaders gathered in Lisbon of the need to deeply transform the ways the European policy in Africa is designed and implemented
  • Develop issues and opportunities to strengthen the collaborations and partnerships between european and african CSOs as regards to the european policies linked to Africa

The alternative summit will be composed of a number of cultural events in various sites around Lisbon, as well as discussions on: Ecology, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Food Sovereignty; Migration; Economic Development and Trade; Human Rights.
