The President the African Union Commission, Jean Ping and the European Commissioner for Development and for Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, met this morning (8.04.2008 ) to discuss topics of common interest between Africa and Europe. During the meeting Mr. Jean Ping stressed the drastic increase in food prices currently challenging Africa and called for the mobilization of the international community to reinvest in the agricultural sector especially in Africa.
Louis Michel has also emphasized his concerns with regard to the increasing food prices and its potential effects in Africa . He stipulated that the European Commission will strengthen its emergency food programme and mobilise the international community to discuss further actions with regard the current food shortage in Africa.
At the end of the meeting, Jean Ping and Louis Michel have underlined the importance of the implementation of the Africa-EU Joint Strategy and stressed their willingness to fully support the process.
