The International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders have submitted a contribution entitled: Human rights defenders deserve true protection. It stresses the need for the EU & AU to take account of the crucial role played by human rights defenders in the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and governance, and therefore of the importance of protecting them effectively.
- “The European Union and the African Union should commit themselves to work for the protection of all human rights defenders, not only for those who work non violently for civil and political rights, but also for economic, social and cultural rights, e.g. access to water and education; better governance in management of natural resources, improved share of wealth, etc.”
