While the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) was on day two of its 16th Ordinary Session, some activities involving the stakeholders and partners of the African Union were scheduled to hold at the margins of the 11th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, in Sharm El Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt.
The Sixteenth Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), opened on Monday 24 June 2008, in Sharm El Sheikh within the framework of the of the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union. During the meeting, the Administrative and Financial issues of the AU Commission, under which they considered the Progress Report on the Administrative Issues referred to the Commission by the 11th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council on the Audit of the Union, Arusha, Tanzania, 6-7 May 2008, was discussed. In addition, the Ambassadors debated the legal and institutional matters such as the Report on the Status of OAU/AU Treaties, the Report of the Commission on Elections and preparations to launch the Permanent Assembly of ECOSOCC and the Report of the Commission on the Use of the Principle of Universal Jurisdiction by some non-African states as recommended by the Conference of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General.
Other side events of the 11th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly, were the meeting of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) that opened on Thursday 26 June 2008 with the 30th Meeting of the African Peer Review (APR) Panel of Eminent Persons followed by the 9th Summit of the APR Forum of Participating Heads of State and Government on 28 June 2008. It was preceded by a Meeting with Uganda, Nigeria and Burkina Faso delegations to discuss the modalities of the Peer Review; a Meeting with the Representatives of the Heads of State of 5 Initiating Countries; a Pre-Summit Meeting of the APRM Advisors; and a Meeting with the APRM Trust Fund Oversight Committee.
Moreover, the Committee on the coordination between the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB); the Ministerial Committee on Candidatures; and the ECOWAS meeting of the Mediation and Security Council have met to dicuss their agendas.
Meanwhile, the 19th Summit of NEPAD Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee (HSGIC) and the 9th Summit of the APR Forum of Participating Heads of State and Government, the Peace and Security Council as well as the Committee of Ten Heads of State on the United Nations Reforms were some of the activities that have taken place on 29 June 2008.
