This brief examines the objectives, mandate and institutional challenges of ECOSOCC. It begins with a brief background to its establishment and proceeds to locate it within the overall architecture of the AU.
This is followed by an examination of its objectives and its potential for adding value to the AU, and a brief overview of its composition, as well as its institutional development, with a focus on the ongoing transition from an interim structure to a permanent one. It also explains the boundaries between ECOSOCC and other avenues of civil-society engagement with the AU, particularly the Citizens and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO) in the Chairperson’s Office at the commission. It concludes with an examination of some of the challenges facing ECOSOCC.
