The great green wall for the Sahara and the Sahel (GGWSSI) is one of the priority actions of the Africa-EU partnership on climate change.
At the second EU-African Summit in Lisbon in December 2007 the European Union and the African Union adopted the first EU-Africa action plan (2008-2010) for the implementation of the strategic partnership between the EU and Africa. The action plan is part of the common EU and African strategy and as part of the partnership framework (n°6) on climate change it establishes a priority action entitled, “Cooperation to address land degradation and increasing aridity, including the green wall far the Sahara and the Sahel initiative”.
