On 25 May 2009, the African Union will celebrate the 47th Africa Day.
Africa Day is observed with respect to the creation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), by its founding fathers on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the current headquarters of the African Union. Later in 2002, Durban, South Africa, the OAU became the African Union (AU). Africa Day is not only celebrated all over Africa, but also in several non-African countries, in particular to Brussels and Bucharest. This year’s Africa day theme is: ‘Unity, Peace and Prosperity in Africa’, according to the first strategic pillar of the African Union Commission ‘Peace and Safety’, which is one of the Strategic planning pillars for 2009 – 2012.
