10th AU Summit in Addis nominating second AU Commission
The AU Summit was held on 31 January – 2 February, in Addis, Ethiopia. Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has been elected the new chairman of the Africa Union (AU) for one year and thus takes over from Ghana’s President John Kufuor.
Presentation of the audit of the African Union
On Monday before the official opening of the Summit, Foreign Ministers of the African Union have begun to examine the audit report of the African Union prepared by a high-level panel.
Continental civil society platform meeting prior to the AU Summit
Prior to the Summit, the Centre for Citizens’ Participation in the African Union (CCP-AU) has organized a continental conference on the African union summit on January 23rd and 24th 2008.
Key issues of the AU Summit
The situation’s in Kenya and Chad have overshadowed the AU summit, the integration of the NEPAD in the AU structure has been finally reviewed and Qaddafi did not resist to push again for the United States of Africa.
AU Declaration on EPAs
The Assembly of the African Union has adopted a Declaration on Economic Partnership Agreements stating, among others, their concern over “ political and economic pressures that have been exerted by the European Commission on African countries to initial Interim Economic Partnership Agreements” and over the impact of the current EPA negotiation process on regional integration.
Slovenian Presidency announces its Development priorities
State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrej Šter, presented the priorities of Slovenia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union to the European Parliament Committee on Development (DEVE) in Brussels.
First joint expert meeting on the implementation of the joint Strategy
In the first follow up meeting to the Lisbon African-EU Summit, African and European experts met on the 4th of February in Addis Ababa to discuss the implementation of the Joint Strategy and Action Plan.
