Report of the Seminar on “Strengthening Regional Integration in West Africa: What Role for the European Union?” – 11-12 May 2010, Brussels

ECDPM website. At the initiative of Spain, in its capacity of President of the European Union (EU), a Seminar was organized in Brussels on 11-12 May 2010 on the theme “Strengthening Regional Integration on West Africa: What role for the EU?”. The Seminar had three objectives. First, it was an opportunity for the Spanish Presidency to reiterate its strong support to the West African region and in particular, in strengthening the regional integration process. Secondly, it was meant to provide the political response of the EU to fund an ambitious programme of aid for trade and economic integration in West Africa (PAPED) for a total amount of at least 6.5 billion euros over the next five years, as announced by EU Council Decision of 10th May 2010. Finally, the Seminar provided a high level platform to discuss four other key themes, namely (i) food security and the regional support programme (ECOWAP/CAADP): How can the EU provide effective support? (ii) Regional Development Strategies: How can the EU support institutional capacity for regional integration? (iii) Peace and Security: How can the EU support regional approaches?; and (iv) Migration and Development: How can West Africa and EU work together?
