Chatham House The dynamics of the security and defence relationship between the AU and EU have evolved in the last decade, and as nations on both continents seek to pool their responses to peace and security issues new opportunities and challenges arise. Attempts to create a more coherent approach to security and defence, through framework documents such as the 2005 EU Strategy for Africa, have interacted with broader internal attempts to develop Union wide positions on security and foreign affairs as set out for example in the AU constitutive act of 2002.
This conference will analyse the current state of, and future prospects for EU/ African cooperation on security in light of the Africa-EU Strategy adopted at the 2007 Lisbon Summit.
