GMES and Africa: side event to the 3rd Africa-EU Summit At a side-event to the Africa-Europe Summit hosted by CERT in Hammamet, Tunisia, African and European stakeholders met to agree on implementation aspects of an Earth Observation partnership bridging the two Continents.

Participants recognised the work done since Lisbon, and agreed on a series of actions be taken to successfully implement  the GMES and Africa initiative, based on African ownership, inclusiveness and long-term cooperation between Africa and Europe. Significant was the agreement reached on a strategic document to guide the implementation phase.

The African Global Monitoring for Environment initiative (GMES and Africa) started to take shape in 2007, in Lisbon, at the 2nd Africa-Europe Summit, after the African request made in Maputo in 2007 to extend the European GMES initiative to respond also to African needs. Since then, decision makers and specialists from the two Continents met regularly to define its scope.
