Improving social protection for informal workers in Africa: A multilateral approach to a multi-dimensional challenge

Africa and Europe in Partnership The Joint European Commission and African Union Commission Capacity Building Workshop on Social Protection in Africa – “Sharing experience on the informal economy” will take place on 10-11 March 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya. Its objective is to tackle the hazardous working conditions of informal economy workers and the lack of appropriate social protection schemes for them. The focus will lie on both forthcoming policy instruments and the implementation of existing ones. The workshop shall provide the opportunity for African experts and key stakeholders to exchange their experiences allow for a continuation of the Africa-EU dialogue on social protection measures and a follow-up to the outcomes of last year’s AUC-EC seminar on employment. Participants including public and private sector representatives, social partners, civil society and international organisations shall try to establish the priority actions for the period 2011-2013 and identify possible cooperation streams with other international partners. The two-day workshop will start off with a plenary session that will be followed by two working groups: one will deal with existing obstacles to effective social protection for informal economy workers, whereas the other will establish a resource mobilization strategy in support of social protection.
