Draft Council Conclusions on Mobility Partnerships as a tool of the Global Approach to Migration

The Presidency submitted the draft Conclusions on Mobility Partnerships as a tool of the Global Approach to Migration. Their objective is, taking into account the experience of the pilot Mobility Partnerships, to confirm the value of this cooperation instrument, which addresses the three components of the Global Approach (legal migration, illegal migration, migration and development) and to set criteria for the identification of third-countries with which the European Union could conclude new Mobility Partnerships. UN chief at 3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon outlined three challenges facing the planet on the issue of migration and placed emphasis on the problem of human trafficking, especially of women and children, in his address to the 3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) that opened in Athens on 3rd of November.

Global Forum on Migration and Development

November 5, 2009

The third Global Forum on Migration and Development will be held in Athens on 4–5 November. Participants at the Forum will include UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the President of Greece and the Greek Prime Minister. The EU will be represented by Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy Tobias Billström and the European Commission by Vice-President Jacques Barrot.

Official launch of the ACP Migration Facility

The ACP Migration Facility aims to support the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to better understand and manage the flow of migration within their borders, was officially launched on the 27th and 28th October in Brussels during a workshop organised by the ACP Secretariat in collaboration with the European Commission’s EuropeAid Cooperation Office (AIDCO).

Euro-African Conference in Paris on migration and development

Strengthening the EU’s Comprehensive migration policy: new initiatives of the European Commission on the Global Approach to migration

The Commission adopted new initiatives to reinforce the EU’s comprehensive approach to migration. It includes a Communication on “Strengthening the global approach to migration: increasing coordination, coherence and synergies”, a Report to the 2008 Ministerial Conference on Integration on “Strengthening actions and tools to meet integration challenges” and a Communication reporting on the application of Directive 2003/86 on the right to family reunification.
